Dicussion: There are those who say that a man named John Thomas "created" the religion known as Christadelphianism. While Dr. Thomas was instrumental in leading people back to the Biblical truths expressed in the Bible, he in fact "created" only a desire in people to want to uncover the Truth. It's easy for people to believe things that they truly want to believe whether these things are factual or not. And this is what most of the modern Christian religions do. They believe, or want to believe, things that are just not Biblically founded. Just where these beliefs came into mainstream is clear in some cases and harder to identify in others. Dr. Thomas made us see that believing these things was wrong in that it was not honoring our covenant with God. He did this by allowing us to read the Bible with an open mind, discarding those preconceived ideas and dogmatisms that exist in the outside world, and by creating in the Christadelphians a desire to know the Truth about God, Jesus and our relationship with Them. We will explore many of those preconceived ideas in the course of this work.
If we choose to believe things that are not Biblically founded, we are choosing to not believe God, in essence calling him a liar. The Bible is the only modern reference we have that directs us in the Word of God. This is why we, as Christadelphians, call God's Word "The Truth". We say this to separate our beliefs from that of mainstream Christianity. In the same manner, we call ourselves Christadelphians because the word "Christian" has come to mean in modern times only "one who believes in Christ". While in fact we are Christians, we choose not to use this term because the word no longer means what it did when it was founded. In it's original context, the word "Christian" meant much more. One who was called a Christian then was a follower of Christ, striving to live, think and maintain a personal relationship with the Father as He did. If we said only that we were Christians, one might think that we abide by the collective dogmatisms that almost one-third of the modern world believes. This is not the case. Our beliefs are very specific and relate to what was taught in the beginning, and again reinforced by Christ.
To complete this course, it is imperative that one has the willingness to learn. We believe that it is each individuals responsibility to learn the Truth. It cannot be taught, it must be understood. We are not trying to teach the Truth, only to direct your studies in a path that will lead to your own enlightnment and fullfillment. The main text of this exersise is the King James version of the Bible. Other texts will be referred to and quotes taken from, but the reader will find need of only the Bible as text.
